One of our beloved rescued piggies, Emm died last month. :(

She came to us from a dedicated Scottish piggy rescue - Thistle Cavies, who saved her (and around 150 other guineas) from horrendous circumstances. All suffered from neglect and malnutrition, most had fungal infections and many were pregnant. They lived in cramped spaces - my two shared a pen not big enough for 6 with 60 others.

We brought Mellow and Emm home when they were about 9 months old, and had been nurtured back to health by the wonderful rescue. Both were very flighty - Emm in particular was the scattiest piggy I had ever seen.

After settling in, we introduced them to our other two piggies - Mary and Marble. It took a good weekend of fraught nerves for them to get on enough for me to put them into their newly extended cage. They had tons of room - an indoor pen which took up a third of our sitting room, and had an upstairs and downstairs!

Emm was always the first to the veggies, and always keen to know what was going on! She had the babiest of wheeks, and loved to stand on her hind legs, nose through the grids of their cage, to try to get a better look!

She began to lose weight, and became increasingly distant. I took her with some urine samples to the vet, who diagnosed kidney failure. There was nothing we could do. She died peacefully a few days later in my arms.

She was a wonderful piggy, very special to us. She deserved a better start in life. Her mistreatment caused her premature death - she was only two. We loved her dearly for 18 months - it wasn't nearly long enough.

My son made this tribute to her: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ut4qKbY16ZI

Jarbax. I am so sorry. To lose a pet of any kind is really upsetting, whether it's a dog, a cat, a pony, a fish or a guinea pig. Why do people mistreat animals? One can only assume it's the same reason they mistreat other humans.

Jarbax - really touched by your post and the video - both in words and pictures, is a very moving tribute to a little animal you obviously loved so much. She was lucky you found her and gave her such a sweet life. We can't ever make up for the cruelty that has been done, but we can give an animal a deserving and happy home once rescued - and you certainly did that.

JarBax, I am so sorry to hear about poor litte Emm.

The wonderful video (well done Son of JarBax) shows how well she was taken care of and she had the company of other piggies in that fantastic piggie cage. It is a pity that she couldn't enjoy it longer but you more than made up to her what she suffered before she came to you.

She has gone up to Piggie Heaven but she will always have a special place in your heart.
