I'm under orders to make a trifle for a family gathering this weekend and thought you might like my version of it.

Medium slice a plain strawberry or raspberry swiss roll and place round bottom of bowl.
Cover with a single layer of fresh strawberries sliced in half lengthways.
Pour over 1 pint of strawberry or raspberry jelly, leave to set.
Make and pour over 1 pint of custard, leave to set.
Whisk 284ml/10 fl oz of double cream until thick and spread over the top with a knife. I use a palette knife.
Decoration optional. Fruit choice optional too. If you use tinned fruit drain off the liquid first.

You've probably noticed the absence of booze, sorry we're an almost alcohol free tribe, by choice.

For those of you abroad, I think you call jelly, jello. :)

    WOT! No 100's & 1000's?

They make all the difference - sprinkle just before serving, otherwise they will colour the cream.

You've been watching Friends again, haven't you Ziggy? I've warned you about that.

My gran used to soak the Swiss roll in copious amounts of sherry. Come to think of it, she used to soak practically everything in cheap sherry. I presume Sheal's version is the low-cal option. :)

Hi all, I did say decoration was optional, booze too.

ClaraLou, it's definitely not lo-calorie, unless you're referring to the lack of booze.

Hmmmm, although I say it myself, it was spot on, family devoured it in no time. :D
