Tropical pips

    Hi all , as summer finally stepped in , many tropical fruit are available from store and market , today I both some japanese medlar from my local market , for who dasn`t know about it this fruit will produce full hardy plant , mine plaqnted 3 years ago have gone throug -14c with no even a scar .

      ps in case any of you want to try something unusual , the lotus season have started a month ago so try to find one of those in your local asian/chinese store.

      and this is what it will produce .

      also available galangal

      and galingale /nutgrass (hardy in UK)

      chinese water chestnut
      [​IMG]
      breadtree ....is grown as annual in some places for the big leaves
      but really not sure if it will grow in uk apparently is a fast growing tree up to 5/6 feet in one season (according to an Italian website)

        Does the Medlar keep it's leaves over winter (evergreen)?

          Hi John , the picture below are my 3 years old plants , yes they are evergreen , last time they made fruit in UK was 2004/5 as we had a nice winter and good spring or will produce fruit in a greenhouse , but if you grow for foliage , can take - 20 and really nice in pot as well , as they will produce 1 foot leaves .

          and finally my eddoes are just shooting along with some date seeds are germinate after last hot week .....unbelivable , try to germinate other palm with no luck .

            So you're still pursuing the lotus? :)

            Look for loquat, John, regarding the medlar, there are a few decent sized ones growing around here.

            Lol ...Pete that massive lotus root was just £1.65 , do you rember I was saying that got one 4 years ago from a shop , managed to get leaves but not flower !!! well I want to retry and see what uppen again , even if this one wasn`t so fresh , but well worth give a try and publish some pictures later on , I found a shop that sell fresh one and told me that they are just available in summer that why if anyone is looking for one now is the time.
            John in case you can`t find the loquat (correct they are not medler) just let me know got lots of seeds available
