Here's a jungle in the making.. but the bananas are smaller than last year which isn't right, so the old chicken pellets may have to be wheeled out (as per BM's instruction) to encourage greater luxuriance. There's a fine gunnera growing under the tree fern to the bottom left that also didn't come out in the piccy, but I think it is a stunning 'architectural' combination. IMHO the Phyllostachys aureosulcata v. aureocaulis has gone bonkers. opinions? [IMG]

I have grown Colocasia esculenta before but I ran out of room to over winter the monster. They are quite prone to spider mite under glass. Are you going to chance it outdors ?

To be honest BM I think I will have to, I don't have a greenhouse and have so much to bring inside this year........I will probably let it die down and then just mulch it really well and hope for the best

Let us know how it fares. I have wanted to grow Colocassia for a while but have been put off by its supposed lack of hardiness. I hope it comes through unscathed [IMG]

I forgot to mention last night that I do have another option, apparently you can dig the tuber/corm whatever it is up and replant in Spring, a bit like a Canna. I believe they take longer to get going in the Spring, but maybe better than leaving it to fend for itself in the ground??

Or if you get bored/hungry/too cramped for space you could just eat it :D Good with slugs/funghi? Any recipes?..it's one of the oldest cultivated plants in the world; Asian records of cultivation date back 10,000 years apparently.

    **On Topic alert**
Thanks for the encouragement persons, I'll dredge some more photos up later (when I've taken them) of jungly bamboos and mystery trees. I'll also be begging ideas for some shiny groundcover suitable for jungliferous planting [IMG] [IMG]

    Hi Jazid

Love the Jungle in Making!!!! Mine is in the beginning stages too - although still in the pots and building site stage.... (long story....)!!!!

Keep at it - and loads more piccies!!!!

Fletch - I have now 3 Colocasias.... my first year.....eeek!!!!! What I have been told by the expert I got one from is that when the foliage collapses, dig up the rhizome and hang from the garage roof in a string bag. Make sure it doesn't go below freezing or it will die. To start it off in the spring, it needs bottom heat - as I don't have a propogator, I was going to sit it on top of a radiator...... If you do leave it outside, give it loads of protection, and make sure it stays on the dry side - wet and cold will rot it.
