Our neighbour's compost heap backs on to our garden - next to our compost heap. I can see a tunnel running down into it. The mouth of the tunnel is about 12 inches high and 8 inches wide. I guess this is likely to be rabbits but do rats make tunnels that big?

Hi Shiney,Can you get a photo of it?Sorry to keep going on about photos but they do help.Yes it could be rabbits and by the sounds of the size it would be a good bet.
Picture the size of those cute Mummy Bunnies hopping along the road before they get squashed flat and you will know the size of the hole means the bunnies are looking for a nice warm compost bin where to make their home ready for when the babies are born aahhhh [IMG] :D

Could be the unmentionables,as there are loads of them around at the moment.I am sure you will know of a really good way of getting rid of them ;) [IMG] [IMG] :D

Kandy, I'll have to wait until the sun is in the right direction before I can take a photo. [IMG]

Sounds like rabbits, rat holes are usually no larger than 3", and you can normally see tell tale runs across grass or soil.

If its rabbits sticking stones down the hole and or a creocote soaked rag will deter them.

For rats use traps with peperami or bacon on but make a bit of a tunnel over the top with chicken wire or an old roof tile so as to prevent injuring cats etc.
