Hi all, firstly may i introduce myself my name is Nafe and I'm a novice gardener

Being my first house, monies tight and lots needs doing to the garden!
I have ventured into the garden and dug the entire thing over. I discovered that B&Q were selling turves off for 20p so decided to give it a go in the garden. Now, there was alot that was black amd mouldy when rolled out and 2 weeks on after watering twice daily! I have noticed the parts which will grow and the parts which definitely wont! If I were to go around the turves that have completely failed, sprinkle seed over the top with a fine layer of topsoil upon this....will it grow or am I completely wasting my time? (told you I was a novice!)

Hi Nafe, I'm also a bit of a novice when it comes to grass. Last year we took on a jungle of a garden and with our lawn we cut out the dead bits in the turf levelled it up with soil and sowed a tough grass seed. This worked very well and you can't tell where we've been. Hope this helps.

Ok thanks Celia, with the last few days' downpours it seems to have been washed away so your suggestion will be taken up once the weather has calmed down!

Hi Nafe, I would be a bit nerveous about the black and mouldy bit. If the tuves are rotten then I would cut them out and dispose. Fill with John innes number 2 and re seed. If the root structure within the turf shows signs of life ie whiteish shoots then they may come back later. Grass is very hard to kill off and can lie dormant. I would give it regular liwuid feeds this year to get it established. Se my post on the lush lawn thread . If you de need to reseed then check that you get the right grass to match the turf. If the turves have a fairly broad leaf then look for a seed for medium to hard wearing.
