I'm pretty new to gardening and at the moment am having to replace dead grass patches with new turf - does anyone have advice as how to do this best

You can patch areas with turf. I did a complete run down the border of both my gardens as I was sick of moss re-appearing each year despite getting the proper treatment. It cured the problem and after four weeks you couldn't tell where it was laid. This isn't always the cae as sometimes the variety of grass in turf is different from the original. I bought mine from B&Q it was about £2.50 a roll.

In the past, I've find it best on small areas, to cut a piece of turf slightly larger than the area I want to fill, place it over the damaged area and cut round it with a serated bread knife my wife doesn't know I've got. It's also handy to cut out the damaged bit. Rough up the soil with the bread knife, if you've sliced out the old bit. I also rough up the underside of the turf a bit too on small areas.
Use a piece of wood or whatever slightly larger than necessary if the area is only around a foot square, lay it over the top and stamp on it.

I also do "transplants" as "grass grows much better in the borders" than it does on the lawn. I dig a little hole with a screwdriver in a 50p size bare patch (pesky squirrels!) and pop a couple of small tufts in.

I have been known to collect the odd light rough divot that seems not to have a home on my golf course and use that on the occasional slightly bigger areas of damage and use a couple of golf tees to stop the blackbirds from lifting them up before the roots take.

My wife says I'm stealing my golf course a bit at a time.
