It's unusual to se them bicoloured Whis4ey, my neighbour has one exactly the same. A few miles away from where I live there are two beautiful Hydrangeas, every year they put on a display of royal blue, so vivid and I've not seen the same anywhere else before. :)

      Hello people,
Mine was a bit like that when I first planted it six years ago. Now its deepest pink. I've just shredded some conifer clippings and am trying that as a mulch around my pieris and rhodos. Maybe worth chucking a bit under the hydrangea? Along with discarded water from my fishtanks for nitrate! Bit hit and miss I know but worth a go to see if it works.

Needs Aluminium sulphate if you want it to be Blue (and an ericaeous compost and some chelated Iron if it is in Alkaline-ish soil, probably also needs a container if very alkaline) ... or Lime if you want it to be Pink (and you are on Acid soil)

Cuttings from this unusual plant exhibit the same two colours ... and in different soils planted elsewhere. Why on earth would I want to try to change it? I already have a most beautiful deep blue and a blue lace cap hydrangea :)

Stunning Whis4ey! :) But I admit I have a soft spot for blue flowers.

I shall be interested to see how I get on trying to get some Hydrangeas to turn Blue (on my Alkaline soil). I've planted a "room" for Hydrangeas, and it would be nice if a few of them could be "persuaded"

I recall having initial difficulty with rhododendrons which need an acid soil. Having built the house on farmland (and farmers invariably 'lime' their fields for cropping purposes) I decided that the way to go was to completely dig out a bed to a depth of some 18 inches or so and replace the soil with a mixture of peat and compost and leaf mold etc etc
It has worked exceptionally well, and that was some 30 years ago DSC00251.JPG

Is the soil around you basically acid @whis4ey? I've always been sceptical that it is easy to make a lime-free bed on lime soil - seen many around here who have done it, never seen one where the plants looked healthy and thrived :)

Yes Kristen ... I think that basically we would be acidic
Were it otherwise the farmers wouldn't be 'liming' so much :)

Have a lace cap that gives up two colors also.
I never deal with the PH change of my hydrangas. Let happen what happens.
Just as a fact there are only certain varities that the ph soil effect the color. Others stay as they are . I also have that nice blue lace cap you do Whis4ey . Will see if I can get a pic up.

Here is another one, not the lace cap blue, I must have not moved it to photobucket from my cell, or can't find it. It's on my facebook. Anyway, this fall, this one is getting good prune back.
