    Bamboo and Climber ID ?

Can you help with the ID on the following two plants ?
First one a bamboo , possibly golden bamboo but I am not sure ,growing outside our hotel in the Algarve. It is about 1.5 metres tall . Would it be OK to grow in the UK , and is now a good time to buy it , or should I wait for spring?

Number 2 , the climber growing up the wall . I spotted this on a house when walking the dog so its the best pic I can get , without walking over their lawn ! I would like to grow this in a small shady spot at the back of my house.

    TIA

bamboos are nice .... those 0lok like they have have been planted with their original pots

problem with planting bamboo is that there are 2 types (invasive and clumping)

even with the clumping type, eventually they 'clump' all over the place, so when planting, you need to dig a 4 foot deep trench x 1 1/2 foot wide around the area that you wish to contain the bamboo ....

and you need to use a rootbarrier (minimum 2mm thick on both sides and bottom of the trench

I have never planted bamboo, but do frequent a bamboo forum and am trying to learn more about them

        Climber could be a Parthenocissus

Yea I agree, Virginia creeper? if it has little green sticky pads (and not roots) holding it to wall then it certainly is :D

The Climber's colouration looks good for Virginia Creeper but the leaf shape is throwing me a little, are there forms with different leaf shape???........or it could just be that I can't make the leaves out properly from the photo? :D

          This is the one I know well;

          Thanks dave and Aesculus
Oh the shame of it !:DOH:Artificial bamboo , I thought the stems looked very regular - thats why I liked it . Mrs H thinks this is hilarious ! Drat I'll have to hand in my GC trowel , and go to the back of the class :D

Moving quickly on to the climber - I am sure its not Parthenocissus quinquefolia Virginia creeper, I have one and the colouring and leaf shape looks different , unless it is another type .Hydrogen and Bilbo I will try and get a better pic this weekend , but its at the end of someones drive . I like this climber it would be perfect for a bare spot I have.

Don't fret Harry, I've done the same in the past. The trouble is the artificial plants are so good now it is very difficult to tell the difference. If possible I tend to check the pots.......that's a dead give away. :WINK1:

Remember those horrible plastic things of the '60's, I can remember my mum having those, they just collected dust! :)

Harry, why don't you go and knock on the door and ask politely what it is. They might even offer you a cutting! :)

I did the same thing earlier this year, I kept walking past this plant I liked, so I went and knocked on the door, asked what it was and came away with enough material for a dozen cuttings, all of which have now rooted :thumb:
