    Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can help identify these strange looking plants that my mother gave to me last year for my garden. Back then they were tiny but now they have turned into huge leggy things! My mother hasn't got a clue what they are! Any ideas please let me know. The picture is of one of the bud heads that have appeared over the past week.

Looks like Malva Moschata (Musk Mallow). Comes in different colours. :blue thumb:

If it wasn't for the fact your mother gave them to you I would have suggested Ragwort.

Doesn't look like my Tansy (which doesn't even have the first signs of buds on it yet)

I'd be writing it off as a weed myself, but I'm frequently wrong.

    One of the Daisies maybe?

We should know for certain when it flowers. Shouldn't be too long now!

I've been out for a walk where there's Ragwort and the flower buds do look remarkably similar, UFO on left, Ragwort on right (Is there a close relative garden plant?)

I agree with you Scrungee, Ragwort! It has clusters of small yellow flowers.

Smileville......these plants/weeds are poisonous to many animals and it's a legal requirement here on the island to destroy them although they are growing everywhere. Handle them with gloves on as the sap can be nasty, put them in a bag, tie it up and put them in your dustbin, don't compost them. Ironically, this plant has been our national flower here for many years, it's about time it was changed!

I'd wait for for the flowers to open before doing anything drastic.

I was going on the basis that they were declared to be a garden plant.
