My lawn is by no means perfect, but it's much better than it was two months ago after a good scarify, aerate, top dress and overseed.

However, I seem to have some tufts of grass that just don't seem to fit with the rest of the lawn. It's probably what was there originally.

Can anyone tell me what it is and how to deal with it please?

    TIA

    Hi ya,

    That is called Yorkshire Fog.

It is a very old form of grass used many many many years ago.

Lawns were completely made of it, but as grasses were developed to be smaller, thinner, mixed with other varietys it was not used.

Mainly found in hedgerows, but can be brought in by winds blowing seed, birds and Im guessing it has somehow got in to your grass mix.

the only way to get rid Im affraid is by manually digging it out, as normal turf herbicides wont touch it.

    Cheers Hostaholic.

Yup, I agree with Hostaholic - digging it out is the only way. Sounds tedious but I've found digging weeds out of the lawn to be very therapeutic. I've got rid of all the daisies and dandelions that way and now I'm moving on to the coarse grasses too. In fact, it's quite addictive....

You could just kill it with roundup then re-seed

How far would RoundUp spread? Would it stay local to where it was sprayed?

It is probably worth just digging out, it might be more manual but the results could be worse if you use round-up.
