Hi Guys,im extending my veg plot some 30 ft,but alas this will take me under a large sycamore tree the trunk is about 10 yds away but the branches spread over the plot, however they are about 25ft above so this leaves me with about 5 hours a sun a day, also the plot has been used for burning odd garden rubbish, cand l mix the burnt soil with good soil or should l remove it? l would like to grow potatos in to break up the soil or should l try another sort of veg,the reason l would like to have potatos is that l do most of digging by hand trowel,as my energy level is rather low so this would help me in the next crop. By the way Windy the lake you call a puddle is in fact my garden pond, just have not had the time to fill it up :D :D [IMG]

You may find that the roots of the tree extend as far out as the branches do. That could make for very thirsty as well as shady ground.
The burnt soil shouldn't be a problem unless garden chemicals have been used on weeds that have subsequently been burnt. Fire will destroy any diseased wood etc, but not the residue of nasty weedkillers.
