I was just wondering what to plant under a climbing rose. Would sage be an OK choice perhaps? I'm more concerned about any effect it may have on the rose but the bare soil is beginning to bother me!

Hi Loofah yes sage would be OK I know it prevents the cabbage white butterfly when planted with cabbages lavenders, violas, hardy geraniums or campanulas.this is what I use mostly,:) this stops black spot spores from splashing back up on the Roses,I use to have just Rose beds but this year decided to under plant all my Roses and I am really pleased with the results,as of to day my roses are totally free of disease and bugs:)

In this border I have Poppies,Saliva's,Wedding cake, lots of lavender,Osteospermum's and uncle Tom Cobley and all;)

Looks gorgeous Woo and a few salvias would go nicely with sage :) Thanks!

Right, they're in. Will take a pic once sage is established.

Very useful thanks WOO :blue thumb: I'm going to be planting up a new small Rose border once I've painted the garage where it's going and I was looking for ideas to underplant. That bit will need to wait until next summer as I need to widen the border to fit more in but will take note of your suggestions and revisit them then.

As always, you've come up trumps ;)
