Solved Unidentified shrub

    Hi,

    Just wondering if anyone can help identify this plant for me? I purchased my first home and this was in the back garden (please forgive me if it is obvious, although I love gardening I am a novice!)

    I have uploaded pictures from the summer and now.

      Looks like my Paeonia lutea which has yellow flowers in spring.

        If it is you should get big black seeds in those pods.
        If not could be a hybrid.

        Agree with @NigelJ, it's peony Ludlowii. Very nice leaves that tend to stay on the plant a bit longer than other forms of tree Peony. Bright yellow small flowers. It can grow to about 10ft. you do not prune it unless it starts getting to big or in the way. The leaves tend to turn black in winter, as your picture shows, and you take them off right back to the uprights.

        The large black shiny seeds should have fallen out of the pods by now.

          Interesting as apparently the seeds take two years to germinate.
          Even so, I find seedlings all around the garden.

            Mine tends to have lost it's leaves by mid November. Like Pete I find seedlings regularly, but only in the vicinity of the plant. I try to remember to remove the seed pods before they mature and shed seeds.

            We pot up the seedlings, usually from just under the plant, and sell them for charity :noidea: :)
