as you can see from the picture it is growing with my twisted hazel, i thought at first that the sapling maybe be a straight hazel runner, but the leaves dont look right an the red on the stalk doesnt seem like hazel to me.

    any ideas?

    thanks

I've a Twisted Hazel as well and a year after purchasing it, I noticed a similar growth, right at the base, almost looking like it was growing from the trunk. Someone told me it might be a sucker or the original plant if the 'twisted' bit had been grafted and I should remove the 'interloper'.

I did this and two years on, it hasn't reappeared.

Yup it's a birch - the seeds get everywhere, in some gardens it's as bad as sycamore for seeding.
You could try potting up, growing on then planting out if you have anywhere suitable.
Grown on in good compost in a polytunnel they casn make 1m in first year

It's birch. Lift it, pot it and try turning it into a bonsai - can be great fun if you've lots of patience.
