I believe its to correct one of the many errors windows develops.
After all, if it had no errors the back room people would have no job.

One of the updates I notice is for a programme I do not use.

I don't know about allowing or not allowing updates, but today's offering was for Windows Security Essentials. There have been a fair number over the last few weeks, but looking back at them, the majority have seen Security issue based. Personally I always download these and so far (Bows to Hubris) we have avoided trouble with Virus infections etc.. In Windows Update you are always offered the choice of whether to accept a download or not. For example one being offered today is a Bing Desktop, no good to us so not selected for Downloading.
I would like to know the reasons behind the advice not to update though.

I would always d/l updates but like yourself, I choose which ones to ignore. I always do the 'custom' install and pick out the likes of Bing to ignore.
One should always look at the 'optional' d/l as well as sometimes you find updates to your graphics card, wireless connection and printers amongst other things.

Hi Pam, without seeing your computer, I`d hazzard a guess that your motherboard may be on the way out.
All that freezing without the 'blue screen of death' could be down to m/b issues and not connected to any updates.

    I`m no expert though.

Yep, those Windows updates do tend to be frequent. I set mine to not be automatic anymore since they had a funny habit of disconnecting me from the Internet once complete. I know it's important to keep your computer updated, but now I pick and choose when to deal with the annoyance.

I too am not a computer expert, but I can not really see a "motherboard being on the way out" The motherboard does little, the memory battery may need changing, but the give away for that is the clock is wrong when you switch on every time.
Things only go wrong when you use or touch them.
I have another pc for a specific job, it never goes wrong, never freezes etc, the reason is, it does only one job, and it has never been connected to the internet.
I would say your problem is down to the updates. (since presumably it was ok until they started so often)
You could try reinstalling windows, if that does no good it needs to be looked at. (sorry)
Assuming you have virus checked etc
