Hi all i just noticed in my local Wickes that they are selling gro-sure seed and cutting compost at £1/bag for 30L
My question is if you add extra nutrients like fish blood and bone etc can this be used is a potting on compost to grow things like tomatoes cucumbers etc I’m quite new to this so would appreciate any advice you can give
    Thanks all

@Notty1975 , seed compost has good moisture retention but is low in fertiliser so is more gentle for the seed germination . I always use it but several on here get great results not using it . When the little seedlings are ready for pricking out I would use Wickes multi purpose compost , or other good brands. I don't think there is any advantage in using seed compost.

I would stick to using normal MPC for potting on . Don't make things complicated if you are new to this :blue thumb:

No, not seed compost for potting on for me. :)
Yes, seed compost with added nutrients would perform well enough but why?

Because they are selling it cheap as in the OP:biggrin:

But agree, by the time you buy extra fertiliser is it really going to be THAT cheap?:)

Well I’ve got a load of fish blood and grow more here already and the grow sure is only a £1 a bag so not really going to cost I’m just wondering if it’s possible by adding nutrients can I use it to grow tomatoes in
                Thanks all

I think it would be OK, but dont overdo the fertiliser, you can always add more as the seasom progresses.
FB&B would be my preferred one, rather than growmore.

I don't even use seed compost for seeds. I find it too dense and much prefer a light compost which allows small roots a free run and also makes pricking out much easier.
As for growing tomatoes in it my gut feeling is no. Pretty much because of the density of it increasing the risk of root rot but also because tomatoes (indeed, all members of the Solanaceae family) are greedy feeders. If you're growing for a crop then I would go with the tried and proven method. A quid for thirty litres isn't a massive saving on the three pound fifty that B&Q charge for fifty litres of MPC. Basically the difference is about the price of a punnet of half decent cherry toms in a supermarket.

Fish blood and bone for most everything here incl tomatoes.:)
A wise old fella ......well, he grew the best tomatoes......suggested spraying tomato plants with diluted milk in spring and early summer and this is what I have done for a few years now. An epsom salt spray or two plus seaweed helps my crops :)
