Using my compost

I am happy to say that today I planted rose bushes using the compost from my compost bin!! So pleased about that!

 

Well done Leonora. People sometimes don`t realise how dificult it can be to produce really good garden compost.

 

Yeah. Well done, leonora. It's taken me 2 yrs but now my bin has started producing big-time

 

Did you both know, that a 1m x 1m x 1m compost bin, when it has been filled, will yield over a 1/2 ton of compost?

 

Well, I didn't know how much it would produce, but it's a fair amount!! I have just been composting garden and kitchen waste since I moved into the flat a year ago. Actually the background to this is rather ironic, and I did discuss it on another forum last year - I got the compost bin free from Camden Council when I was in my previous accommodation, and I was SUBJECTED TO A CAMPAIGN OF HARRASSMENT BY THE LANDLADY because of it!!! And that is why I was re-housed by the council, so in fact she did me a favour.
Last week I picked up the current COMPOSTING NEWS in the library, and there is now a 'Belsize Park Community Composting Initiative', which she is presumably boycotting.....

Well, I think she might eventually get in trouble with the Council if she refuses to co-operate with their recyclying policies....

 

I was at a party last Xmas and I was told male urine is a great activator on compost so I got my partner to take a stroll to the bin for his evening outside cigarette stroll. What took a year to rot down took only months. I was amazed .

He blames the bitter beer !!
Next time you have a party encourage your guests to recycle outside.

My Composter is 5' high. That'd take everyone back to their schooldays :D

give me a few pints and a 5 foot bin wouldnt be a problem - flashing at anyone on the playground at the back of my house might be though.

I lost my cat last year, we used to use compressed saw dust as the cat litter - cheeper than the other stuff and that make excellent compost - probably because of the cat pee in there

 

My 6'3" husband can aim into our compost bin no problem (funny how he can hit a 5' high hole at night in our wind-tunnel garden, but not the 2' high toilet with the lights on...), and he does so every time a really big load of garden rubbish goes in.

I've used my compost on my Goldcrest cypress, artichoke and Hart's Tongue fern. I think I used it for the Wollemi pine too. I mixed it in with commercial garden waste compost to plant the witch hazel last weekend as there wasn't an awful lot.

The husband has started drinking ground coffee rather than instant, so we have a good supply of coffee grounds. Starbucks sometimes give away bags of used grounds for composting. And we put some of our shredded bills in sparingly.
