Van driver fined for blowing his nose!

Seems this chap was stopped at traffic lights, very little traffic about, found he had a need to blow his nose. Put his van in neutral and applied the hand break, did the deed. The lights changed and he drove away only to be pulled over by police because he had been observed as "not being in control of his vehicle"!

Remember a while back when a woman was fined for having a drink out of a bottle whilst also stopped at a red light? When are these police going to properly define a violation and a safe action!

Can anyone see any logic in this incident!

I am pleased to report that the van driver is taking it all the way to court where I hope it will get the appropriate trouncing from the judge it deserves!

Strikes me its just what we expect from our local friendly bobby these days.

Its hardly surprising that the public view most coppers as the "enemy" these days.
Its ages since I've asked one for the time. lol

Motorists are fair game, but the mugger that might fight back is another proposition..
Come to that, even the local youth that vandalise the place are out of bounds, far too risky to touch.

Bearing in mind some of the blue light incidents that have taken place recently I think its the general public that should be asking if the police are "in control of their vehicles"

this strikes me as a complete waste of money and this poor mans time and hassle - we know the country has been in a flu pandemic and everyone i know has has a cold or flu - we need to blow our noses - he did it safely with the break on. what if he had sneezed instead? would they still be booking him for that act of nature

    ridiculous

I often think about that - what is the law if you have a woopsie because you've sneezed whilst driving? Often when I sneeze I do two or three right off. And it's a proven fact that you can't help but close your eyes when you sneeze. That could amount to several seconds driving with eyes closed!

I thought it was against the law to sneeze whilst your driving because its impossible to do so without closing your eyes. I remember being told by my driving instructor (I have hay fever!) that I had to stop the car, handbrake, out of gear, sneeze/suppress/use handkerchief or whatever before continuing the journey.

It'll get thrown out of court surely, and the cops will be red-faced...I cant see any other outcome.

The 'fact' that you can't keep your eyes open while sneezing has been disproved, although it is very difficult.

Anyway, back to the point, yes it does seem a tad silly to fine this man. Perhaps the coppers would have rather he'd blown snot all over his steering wheel, thus making it wet and slimey and impeding his ability to grip it. Or perhaps he should have let it all go over his windscreen thus impeding his view.

It is a bit of a farce to do someone for not being in proper control when there was no risk, especially when the roads in the country are now so bad that I would argue nobody is proper control of their vehicle on many roads. It is difficult to be in proper control when at any point in time, two of your tyres have lost contact with the road surface having dropped into a pothole.

Also, why is it legal to put huge advert posters up at roadsides, or increasingly, on roundabouts, when we can get done for driving without due care and attention?

And what about those odd 'traffic calming' measures that are appearing all over, where they narrow the road so only one car can get through at a time. If a copper was to spot me pulling into the middle of the road and driving head on at another car who was also in the middle of the road, they'd have a field day, yet that's exactly what the councils want us to do when they put those traffic calming things in.

The thing is, the government has made no secret of the fact that they want us all to stop driving, so with roads deteriorating and tales of motorists getting done for the most trivial things, perhaps that's all part of the plan.

Well, it is to the point actually because this issue of sneezing was on my mind when I posted this. I get very little warning when I have a sneezing fit but I'd have no time to pull over and park, always assuming there was somewhere close by to park, and what if one was on a motorway?

Very well put Clueless, some very good points there.

And I'd like to add to your last paragraph, although the government want us all to stop driving, they still want us to keep using our cars, its a big problem for them.

If we all got rid of our cars the country would go down the pan the next day.
So much money is generated from cars these days and so little of it is spent on roads and maintenance its a joke, most of the roads around here are third world.

And its because they were in such a bad state before the winter that they are like they are now, its nothing to do with the weather, its just poor maintenance.

The mind boggles at this trivial 'offence' and the waste of police time chasing it up. I hope the court sees common sense and throws it out. There are so many other people driving about whilst on their mobiles or pressing buttons on their sat navs, these people are really stupid and should be prosecuted - I followed one last night down the outside lane of a dual carriageway - they slowed down and were wavering about in the lane holding every one up behind - at the next roundabout I could see the driver having an animated call completely oblivious to the outside world - now that is dangerous.

I saw something like that on the M1 once. A driver was driving so dangerously I got the wife to phone the police. This 4x4 was randomly drifting from lane to lane, and at one point steered straight towards a lorry that was in lane 1, and accelerated straight at him. I was already at a safe distance but went for the brakes anyway as I was so convinced a pile-up was about to happen. At the last instant, with about 2ft before impact, 4x4 man went nearly full lock right and zipped straight across lane 2 into lane 3 with no regard for what else might be around.

I got the wife to phone the police and had her relay to them my running commentary of what was going on. I gave them the road we were on (M1) the direction we were heading, what junction we'd just passed and how many miles back it was, the speed that we were doing, and anything else I thought they might need to work out exactly where this 4x4 was and where it would be by the time they got some eyes on the scene.

Can you guess how interested they were? They thanked us for the call and said they'll see if they have a patrol in the area. Maybe I should have said the driver had just blown his nose, and they'd be straight out with helicopters and everything.

Coppers need to get a life and TRY driving along a lot of small roads, where they can catch Many a driver on their mobile phone. Yesterday, I had one Stupid young woman on hers come round a bend towards me, on MY side of the road as she yapped on her mobile. Luckily, I was able to take avoiding action, while she simply carried on going.

I have spent a good few hours over the last 6 months sat in Police station front desks observing their Desk Staff for their NVQ'a.

They are getting lots and lots of people coming in to produce documents for points for using their mobiles phones whilst driving.

The staff say they get far more of those than speeding now and the police are really clamping down on it.
