Okay after getting rid of my cistus I found this growing underneath in the dark, it's varigated although a lot of the growth is totally green due to the lack of light. Does anyone know what it is?

    Thanks Dai :)

Looks like my picture when I've looked it up :D I now know what to do with it and what to do with the green parts - green = bad and I should cut it off!

Katherna variegation in a plant is an anomaly in the genes and is a sought after trait by gardeners, actually the green bit is the more healthy bit as it has a greater ability to produce energy for the plant than the variegated bit that lacks chlorophyll, if you don't want the plant to revert back to it's original green form then cut it off.
