After spending an endless amount of time searching through website after website... I have yet to come across a website which offers photos of a range of vegetables (or fruit) grown from seed showing each stage,

    For example,

I think it would be very useful if you could see photos taken at... once a week perhaps, for the plants with normal growing rates. It would then form a useful reference.

    So
    Day 1 - Seed sown
    Day 8 - Seedlings showing
    Day 15 - Pricking out...
    .
    .
    Day 78 - Harvest Time.

Would be interested to know what other people think about this.

MyFolia allow people to record Sown / germinated / planted out and First / Last harvest date, so can be a good source of information for planning, but the data is un-vetted and often dubious - the averages for Tomatoes are about right, but the first harvest is showing something like "1 day" and the last harvest "630 days" or somesuch, which makes me suspicious of their data - particularly when the sample-size is very small

Sounds like a project to undertake Luke. Don't trust others to do it for you. I can assist if you help & we'll post our results here on GC

Day 1, seed sown could be pretty boring though :WINK1:

I have beetroot, pea and parsnip detonation going on now, mostly thanks to the hot beds, seeds are throwing roots into the soil & one beetroot has its seed leaves in the air. Peas are also coming up.
Peas On Earth, Purity Of Esssence. P.O.E. (What film is that from then ?:WINK1:)

My schedule is already very regimented.

    1. We plant seeds when we find the time (actually, Mrs shiney plants the seeds :heehee:).

    2. The first shoots come up when they feel like it.

    3. The plants get potted on or planted out when we get around to it.

    4. Hardening off - don't know nuffin' about that.

    5. First harvest date - when they're ready and I'm around.

    6. Last harvest date - when they start going to seed or the frost hits.

It works for me!! :dbgrtmb:

Just taken a look at myfolia. Despite looking through endless websites, I havent paid much attention to this... I will spend a little more time on there... sure theres plenty to learn. thanks kristen.

    :loll:

    about as regimented as mine!

Hopefully going to get the camera up and running by the start of next week... else Its a new one. I think it would be a good reference for the future... for younglings like myself. If the date is stamped onto the photo, then if your not already spot on with your sowing/pricking out times etc, then you can only learn from past mistakes.

I'm recording days to germination, p/o, potted on data this year in my database, also planting out data, yield and days to harvest etc. Just on fruit and veg though, each record will have a photo of seedlings and mature plant and any other specifics that need recording. Through this season I'll also be linking that to preservation/storage methods and recipes to use via a keyword search. It'll take no more than 10 mins a week to keep updated and better than a diary/book as it will be searchable.

Simply having a camera in your pocket and constantly taking pics every year provides an invaluable record of not only the differences between seasons each year, but what stage your crops were at each month.

    Steve,

That sounds like a fantastic project. Just out of interest, will this information you are collecting be made available to everyone via the internet, or are you planning on using it on a personal level? If you are thinking of it being available for everyone... I for one would be very interested in your results... and possibly comparing it to that of my own.

    Scrungee,

I never take enough photos of things... especially of that in the garden. I'm planning on getting a cheap (but decent) second hand camera in the future to keep on me for the very purpose of what you mentioned above. [hr]
oh, and of course, a very grateful thank you for everyones replies. :dbgrtmb:

Yes it will be available, probably this time next year as I'm still developing the database structure..ie improving and adding to it.

Digital photo's are great record keepers as they are dated and timestamped, providing the camera you use has that facility, which nowadays is pracically all of them.
