    Veg In the Shade? Hello,

I have been allowed to extend my garden beds to include a little veggy patch for next season. Said bit of land was previously ear marked for the other halves shed! The shed is not feasible this year so I am going to attempt to grow some veg in it. The only problem is, the patch is between two garages. It does get a little sun, but for about an hour as the sun begins to go down.

Can anyone recommend any Veg which may adapt well to a shady, sometimes breezy environment?

I plan to build a little raised bed from railway sleepers to house the patch.

You could try sowing early vegetables such as spring cabbage, winter lettuce and broad beans - if you plant them in early autumn they'll be well established by spring. Perhaps, calabrese, kale, radish, spinach, herbs (chives, mint, parsley), chard, rhubarb. 'Green leafy things' really, although there's no reason why you couldn't at least try some root veggies, carrot, or turnip. I've got half a dozen (left over) potato plants in my 'never gets any sun, often windy' bit - they're well behind the other potatoes, but I wasn't going to waste them, so I'm just leaving them to do their own thing, I don't expect much but the experiment is .... interesting!

You will have to experiment with stuff like Fidgetsmum recommends, you will find some veg that will be OK there. I'm sure salad leaves, lettuces, spinach and rocket will thrive. You could try some runner beans growing up the garage walls next year.

    .

    Hi!
From experience, total waste of time trying!
When I moved into here, I planted some cabbage and lettuce in a position (8by6feet) between a shed and small greenhouse as the previous occupant had some flower plants growing there.

None of my plants hearted up, plenty of leaves but useless.

The next year I bought myself a proper greenhouse and moved it up 2 feet from the shed and now grow some vegs on the otherside of the new GH without any problems!

Veggie plants need both air and sunlight to prosper!

Give it a go and see what happens, Lolly.

I've grow lots of veg in part shade. They don't do as well, but as long as there is decent light and some direct sun you should get a crop from most veg.

The only things that aren't even worth trying are toms, chillis etc.
