Been looking through all the seed catalogues from companies like T&M, Mr Fothergills etc. The amount of seed I want to try to propagate is going to cost me a few bob. So I made use of the internet to shop around and compare.

    Found these people:

Less than a pound a packet for most of the seeds they supply and includes free postage and packing. Anybody tried these people before?

Not much help just now Chopper, but might be worth considering for next year: I buy my seeds from our local Wyevale garden centre. They sell them off in a 50p-a-packet sale, usually just after August bank holiday - the only ones I don't buy are things with short storage life - like Parsnips (but even they would probably grow enough). I like getting a packet of F1 Butternut Squash reduced from £3.50, or more, to 50p :)

P.S. Those seeds that will keep a year or two are worth buying double-amount so you have them for the year after too, in case not available in the next sale. I've got a chilli variety I like, comes about 6 seeds per packet, so I got 3 packets of them ...

The other really cheap place is Wilkinsons, they have already discounted their seed packets - can usually find a bargain or two there, you have to be quick because they take them off display so they can sell more christmas rubbish.

    .

    Agreed!

And they germinate and grow, unlike some of T&M's expensive packets!

    Cheers!

Well I have ordered some vegatable seeds. I reckon it is worth a bit of a gamble. £15.00 has bought me more seeds than I was going to buy. Had a look at some other seed suppliers and costed them on thier websites. Works out to be a saving of about 65%.

I read somewhere that seed suppliers have to be able to guarantee a certain level of germination before the seed can be offered for sale to the trade. (Might not be exactly what I read, but something pretty close).

Point is, no matter what name is on the packet, there are no guarantees with gardening. You try and do what is right for your plants and seed but there is always some little gremlin in the works that can spoil things.

If the seed do not germinate, I have lost a few quid. Hardly the end of the world as we know it. Besides there is always quick setting concrete!!:D
