I have recently moved to a new house with a medium sized garden. I have decided to make one area a vegetable patch. I have been told that it is a good idea to plant potatos in a new patch, is this right? Are there any other suggestions as what to plant at this time of year.

The reason for planting potatoes in a new patch is to break up the soil for next year, Potatoes are the best for this as the tubers travel. make sure that you dig up all the potatoes (if you want to) or they will keep coming back in the patch every year.

There are many good other things to grow at this time of year. Plenty of salad veg and you can start sowing veg for winter and spring eating next year. Have a scout for seeds at your local garden centre.

I am reasonably new to veggie gardening but have now got the bug.

    Good luck!

I don't really know anything but I've just had a look in one of my books for you apparently you can sow:

Spring cabbage, beetroot, french bean, some varieties of pea (Kelvedon Wonder or Pioneer), some lettuce, kohl rabi, kale and endive.

I'd say brussel sprouts, or greens in general.
If your breaking new ground then you will have weed problems, these you can weed between easily and they will occupy the soil through the winter.
I think its a bit late now for spuds.

Just be prepared to weed after the rain has gone. I use weed membrane in most areas of veg I have planted on the allotment and garden veg patch.
