I've been told that on our allotment site that carrot fly makes it almost impossible to grow carrots or related plants (parsley for instance) in open ground.

So I've invested in this product from Amazon it cost just under £14 for a 2.1m x 4.5m piece which I will probably chop in two to cover two small beds the instructions says it should be placed over the bed as soon as seeds or plants are put in and then left on until harvest, it kind of looks like a huge piece of plastic sieve material[IMG]

you will have to secure it in case of windy weather, but looks promising. Let us know how it goes.

I'll drape it loosely (or maybe supported on short canes) and then tent peg it all the way round

Hi @chris whitelaw it does work for years I have always planted mine in a raised bed .the carrot fly can only fly 30 inches high, or you could plant them with aliiums, including chives and garlic.;)

That works to a point but if you have trees or other tall Shrubs surrounding the bed then it doesent work as they fly from plant to plant...

I see you already have plans as to how to use the environmesh, but I thought you might like to see something I made and still use today. Made from tile batons that are 1 inch x 1.5inch thick these frames are 12ft long x 3ft wide x 3.5ft high, they are as light as a feather and can be lifted up with one finger.

The benefits are, easier setup as it is just moved into position. Lightweight, so it is easily moved for weeding, planting and harvesting. And multiples of them (I have four) can be placed together.
