Ventnor Gardens, Isle of Wight

Sheltered on the south coast the gardens are well protected and have a good display of plants difficult to grow else well elsewhere.
Two of the biggest Washingtonias I have seen in the UK.


Leucodendron argenteus.


Banksia intergrifolia, just a few flowers left.


Agave polyphylla.


Brahia armata, much bigger than mine.


One of several cactus areas.


Victoria amazonica in the tropical house.






Thubergia laurifolia.

 

Tetrapanax paperifera.


Puya.


Leucodendron, no label but

could be Safari sunset.


Herbaceous borders.


Savia Phyllis Fancy.


Don't know this one but I'm sure someone will! no label.

Cordyline 'Sunrise', I've never seen any others and in better condition than my one but I noticed the trunks are just as thin.

 

My late inlaws used to live in Carisbrook. I spent many an hour in those and other gardens.

@Victoria, weather was ok, dry but very windy all the time.

I think its Aloe polyphylla, must admit it does look more like an Agave.

I was very impressed with the amount of cacti they have when I went there a couple of years ago.

 

I must have looked at the label too quickly or possibly my Macular Degeneration caused the letters to alter. I should have taken pics of the labels as well.

 

We were at Ventnor a few weeks ago but weren’t really able to visit the gardens

 

I missed this reply @Freddy, When we went it was very windy, (all three days) being near the end of season some paces were closed. We found Shanklin and Sandown a bit shabby and tired.

We were in Bristol a couple of weeks ago, son now lives in Emersons Green, NE side.

Sorry to learn of your eye problem Strongy. A close friend had that, and had to have injections into the eyeballs. Sadly he passed away recently.

Remembering my visits to the island. The inlaws moved from Welling .Kent. to Carisbrooke. Sadly they are no longer with us.

The island is so situated that it gets so much of the warmer climates. I remember visiting Shanklin chine. You can see the oil pipeline, ?Pluto. This pipeline was laid across the channel to france, to provide a constant supply of fuel during ww2.

 

@Freddy, I didn't know which part of Bristol you moved to or where you were before.

@Mike Allen, It is in it's early stages and mainly my right eye but I know it will progress and may need treatment sometime in the future.
