I have posted this on the 'Redundancy' thread but thought I'd start a new thread so people can share their results...

I received an email yesterday from a potential employer asking me to complete an online Verbal Reasoning Test. I didn't think that would present any problems as I like to think I have a good grasp of the English language.

Boy was I wrong! I scored 53% and 46% on the two practice tests I found, partly because of time constraints (30 questions in 19 minutes) and partly because I have a tendency to over-analyse things.

I did the 'proper' test this morning and ran out of time, so I missed a couple of questions. I really hope that I fared better on that than I did on the practice tests, otherwise the score will be very low. The results are sent direct to the employer so I don't know the result.

The format is such that you have a paragraph of text, following which you have a statement which you need to answer as True, False or Cannot Answer. You have to base your response purely on what is contained within the text.

Here's a link to a practice test if anyone fancies a go (I'll start a separate thread for this too).

I used the test results rather than the percentile.

If anyone does it, please let me know how you get on. Hopefully you won't be as 'fick' as I am

They did ask for a lot of info, for signing in, but none of what I gave was anything like the truth - just a normal day for me :heehee:

Here's what I posted on your other thread. Sorry for the length of it.

The idea of the test is to see whether you can correlate an answer based only on the information given and not on any prior knowledge you may have. This makes it difficult because, with some of them, the conclusion you should reach (for the purposes of the test) is not necessarily the true answer.

This is one of the distinguishing features between this type of test and the more straight forward IQ tests (such as the old favourite, the Cattell test) which don't try to confuse you with information that you may already know to be false.

The speed of doing this test can be enhanced by not needing to read through all the information given in some of the questions. Some of them are exactly the same information with just a change in the question at the end. You should be able to recognise these once you have the knowledge that they occur.

I did the full test and got 86.7%. All this shows is that I'm good at doing tests. For example: for someone to successfully become a member of Mensa they have to achieve a certain percentage in one of the IQ tests that they supervise. This only shows that you are capable of doing well in the test but says nothing about whether you can successfully fill a position in a job - or be a socially adept person.

Aptitude tests are of more use than IQ tests for seeing whether someone is suitable for a particularly but these still have many faults.

Whoops! Sorry about the lecture  but I think that particular test that you have done is a poor example of a test, and I'm sure that they don't expect anyone to get a high percentage when doing it seriously - as you may have to do.

So don't worry yourself too much. Over 50% is a pretty reasonable achievement.
