My neighbour and i are looking for a solution for his fish pond. We have discovered a colony of rats spread between six houses and enviromental health officer says they will be drinking out of the pond. Has anybody had same problem and does anybody know of a suitable cover to prevent them getting to the water sourse. We have a guy in sorting the problem of the rats but my neighbour dosn't want to risk losing his fish.

More urgently, there is a real risk of Weil's disease associated with Rat wee & water.

Make sure no one comes into contact with the pond with any open wounds. Not even a scratch.

If anyone comes down with Flu like symptoms get to a Doctors straight away and say they may have been exposed to Weil's, if you don't get the right treatment straight away you can die, sometimes even a year later.

I've had it once, its like Flu but with a lorry parked on you as well.

Oh, welcome to Gardeners Corner too:)

Sort rats, replace water. Rats are the pits, I had some recently and found out that the poison from the DIY centres are rubbish. Despite a lot of shot rats, you really need a decent poison to kill the nest. My aim improved by the end though...

I can't think of any decent cover as rats can fit through tiny holes and gaps. You could put up a 2ft high barrier all round but rats can burrow under it so you might be best waiting for the chap to sort the rats and then replace the water.
