Ask your vet to write out the prescription...

You aren't obliged to purchase any prescription medication from the vet practice that has prescribed them. It's just we normally just get the med's there and then. But if you want to go elsewhere the vets should give you a written prescription to take away with you.

Perhaps if more of us, told our vets that they are overcharging for their med's, they might stop ripping us off and start charging proper prices for them

Dunno about "profit", which might be excessive of course, but if they cannot make money on X then they will move the charges to Y instead ...

Vets.....Most not all see you as the client as a source of revenue.
Going to tell you of a conversation yesterday, Had a carpenter in to hang new doors, coffee break this was the conversation: He had purchased a new male Boxer puppy which he dutifully took to the Vet for inoculations Vet said to him would he like to book said pup in for castration as this procedure would insure a better temperament... the times I have heard this from unsuspecting pet owners It most certainly does not calm the down or have any affect on temperament,
this is what you breed in.
As a dog breeder, international judge and exhibitor of 40 years standing
(Camglia Shih Tzus) I have seen and heard it all... this being one of the most popular money making ploys of the lot. Why would any one purchase a male dog and then have it castrated. why not get a bitch?
Sorry for the rant but it makes me so angry I think it is an abuse of trust on the Vets part.

Same with almost all businesses though? ... increasingly more so as time goes by it seems to me, more put in store by Profit than Service or Society

As a volunteer for a dog rescue, I would like to see more neutering, not less. When the rescue centres are empty, then I would agree with you.

I'm so lucky with my vets, I often get Megan seen for free, get her weighed, heart checks etc and I've never had to pay a huge amount for medication, at least so far.

But how many breeders are as conscientious and caring as you? Really not that many I suspect. Like Loli I have been involved with dog rescue for many years and see the results of 'just one litter'/backyard breeders/puppy factories. Whether it has any effect on temperament or not, it would help stop the thousands of dogs being destroyed in pounds every week or stuck in rescue kennels.

Sorry, off topic Val, and you can ask your vet for the prescription and use it to buy your meds online. Do you not have insurance to cover them though?

We've only ever had Golden Retrievers, and I think of them as docile so maybe hard to breed a wrong-un?, but ours have all come from kennel-club registered parents, with some recent championship winning blood, and they have all been perfect hounds and had good health records too <TouchWood>

We haven't insured ours after Year 1 once we are sure they are fit & healthy (and they come with 6 months [or 12 maybe?] insurance from kennel club). Pay a fair bit in the last year or maybe two, but a lot less than we would have paid for a lifetime of insurance.

Aha..Insurance another rip off, I know of people who going to the Vet are asked before any treatment have you got insurance? then the price is ajusted accordingly insurance in my experience is like a hospital gown it does not cover your arse, sorry that's a bit coarse . but when I 1st heard it and being familiar with hospital gowns I did see the funny side. Re back street breeders you wont stop it until the Kennel Club refuse to register these litters, if they are pedigree dogs,
My Daughter has a 3 legged Apso rescue, Grandaughter has 2 rescue one Alsation, 1 Heinz. So we are well aware of the brilliant and caring work that rescue people do Although drop in the ocean, It is heart breaking, Has any one seen Alan Davies programme about dogs enough to make you weep. starved/neglected/ caged all day.

I too have Golden Retrievers and the insurance premiums are expensive but we've definitely had our moneys worth over the years:rolleyespink: They too came from KC registered parentage of 'good' standing but have none the less been blighted with problems:doh:.I don't mean to knock my vet as he's been marvellous over the years but I do feel and have had this discussion with him that because they are insured the treatment seems to go to the extreme on occasion and in some cases totally over the top.Our vet bills have run into thousands of pounds with on going medication that has thankfully ceased as it turns out most was totally useless and causing more harm than good.I'd never thought to ask for a prescription as I've heard of conflicting reports of using online suppliers and never dared risk it.
Saying all that the vets are running a business it's the way of the world I suppose...

Personal choice what lengths folk will go to to keep their pouch going of course, but having seen what some of my chums have had done ofr their pets I wonder whether it was for the animal's benefit ... or the owners??

Insurance policy premiums are going to reflect the treatment that people & vets choose to have done, so prices go up as MRI scans for pets become common place ... and that price has to be shared out.

@ Kristen... I completely agree...I like most pet owners would move heaven and earth to keep our pets with us no matter what the financial cost but for who's benefit?
I can honestly speak from personal experience..I know now I let my first old Goldie go on far too long,I just couldn't bare to part with him,it didn't feel like it at the time,I thought I was doing the best for him,now I understand the wise words of my vet but back then I never,he was very supportive and in the end it was his decision even though it was me who made the call,so the penny did eventually drop eventually:doh:...
                      I'm hoping I've learn't my lesson !

Sorry @Val.. went off at a tangent then:doh:...I'm pleased you had a good result and thank you for the link:dbgrtmb:

I have often said to other pet owners that it is the quality of life that counts not the quantity, but this all goes out the window when it is my pet, I still try to give them both!!

                          I have two sayings....

Create a home for a dog and not a dog for a home, and it's better a day sooner than a day to late...

My two I've got now are both rescue dogs..

The little one on the left of my avatar is a cross between a German Shepherd and a Corgi, so got the ickle legs of a corgi... His breeder/owners were prosecuted for cruelty and neglect. He came with a lot of issues, fears and phobia's and taken a lot of TLC and hard work a lot being out of the box.

The one on the right, She's a German Shepherd pedigree, we adopted her when she was 5 months old via a specific GSD rescue. She'd been brought by an elderly couple, who said she was incapable of learning as she wasn't house trained!

Owing these two has lead to my proudest day..... Here's their story http://www.pdsa.org.uk/about-us/animal-bravery-awards/gold-medal-dogs Look for Ellie and Jones...

There are only 23 recipients of the PDSA Gold Medal, two of them I have
