i`ve got a viburnum about 15ft growing up the wall-over front window and would like to know when and how to cut back. i planted it about 2yrs ago when about 3ft but just shot away last year.only trimmed it a bit first year but never touched it since.

What type of Viburnum is it. If it's the normal evergreen type, we prune ours straight after it's finished flowering, sometimes quite hard and it comes back in no time and much better, not so woody.

cant remember lisa0307 but begins with D.i think.am i right in thinking viburnum is a member of the honeysuckle family?.ours has lots of small clusters of small white flowers and lots of long thin pointy leaves.flowered right up til december but still looks well after snow and bad weather.

yeah sounds like the one we've got. if you prune straight after flowering then it has time to grow new wood for next flowers, they always seem tough as old boots in our garden no matter how hard we prune them, some we've taken to a foot or so and they always come back even after hard frosts.

I reckon you could probably take cuttings anytime, my dads done it without any problems. Use the gel to root pots if you have trouble starting them off, this always works for us no matter what type of cuttings we take. As for cutting back Viburnams "hard", I wouldn't attempt this with anything young, they would have to be well established plants to be able to take such drastic action.

Then you will never be without them ever again. Think you get six in a pack, they look like jelly in a pot with foil tops usually. Just take your cuttings, normally 3 or 4 to a pot, pierce a small hole in foil top and slide them in, Gel has all the hormone wotsits that do the root growing and bobs your uncle, when roots appear, pot up and on, job well done.
