Here's the cutting I took last year off an old vine. It's growing away quite happily but what do I do with it now? I've got a large pot (18" dia) that it can go into but what's the best way to start training it? So far nothing has been done other than tie it to a cane to stop it flopping over. Also what's the best medium to plant it in? If required I have a bag of limestone chips I can add to DIY compost, otherwise it would be loam based JI type and somewhat on the acid side.

Iff you are keeping it there i would buy some twig trellis expanding ones you can get all different sizes iff you have a wilkinsons they are inexpensive otherwise you will have to go to a garden centre hope this is helpful otherwise a pagola is a good idea with pots one on each side then you can grow something on the other side jasmine, honey suckle and clematis.

Apparently the basic idea is to get a T shape like a one layered espalier, but they can be grown in all sorts of ways:

My vine weevil and chafer grub ridden specimen is making new growth, maybe enough to train soon!
