Walking around Wilkos this morning waiting for Mrs H to come out of Debenhams , I saw an interesting looking plant Fallopia Aubertii ( I can hear the mutterings ). Googled it and its Russian Vine (suspected thug ) ! . Now I have a nelly Moser clematis planted next to the house wall and surrounded by patio. The clematis is not doing very well and I am going to dig it up and try and bring it on in a container. I was going to plant a Montana to hopefully quickly cover the trellis. Would the Vine be OK in this situation ? Would it possibly cover an 8 foot trellis in a season ?

    TIA

I wouldn't. I have heard reports that people rue the day they ever planted this in a garden context. It gets EVERYWHERE!

In fact, if you want quick growth in a season, beg a chunk of Golden hop off someone. More controllable.

Yes think you'd be much better with the clematis montana HarryS I have or maybe had a russian vine, as looks like it may have died overwinter(thought they were indestructable, lol) like a flippin triffid cutting bits off it all summer long it seemed to grow overnight attaches itself to all my plants smothering them, only grew it to cover an ugly fence, never again.

        C. Montana its going to be then !
On second thoughts , the Golden Hop you mentioned looks stunning . Will it grow on a northish facing wall , that only gets sun until about 10 in the morning ? Is it available in garden centres , Ebay is not showing the golden hop ?

There's nothing about being a "Suspected thug" with the Russian Vine, Harry, it is definitely a Thug, just to give you a clue it's also known as the "Mile a minute Vine":D:heehee:

Hi Armandi - the Russian vine is in the bin now !
Thanks Simbad, your C . Marjorie looks stunning.
I grow clematis all around my garden no problem , but this spot is doing my head in :wallbang: I have just put a post in "pest diseases - plagues and pestillence" showing the problem with my C. Nelly Moser. I think I would like to try a Golden Hop as suggested by Madahhalia , if I can locate one. Other than that I am going to tie plastic flowers from the £ shop to the blooming trellis ! :D

                Cheers for the link Bilbo
I am off on holiday for a couple of week now , when I get back I'll see if the seller still has one. I have enough clematis , and if it produces hops next year the aromatic smell of them beats a million roses :dbgrtmb:
