Today I started to empty the compost from the two pots I grew my early strawberries in last year. I actually ditched the plants in the autumn as they were looking a bit sick but I thought it was due to lack of water when we'd been away on holiday.
I suspect that the sickness was due to these little blighters - I found 40 of them in the two pots.
The birds had a nice feed this afternoon!

 Grrrrrr ... They are pesky little blighters Dave & they do seem to like potted strawberries I find too.. They are responsible for the sudden death of so many plants... Still the birds enjoyed.. :yho:

    Dave

Fat, white, C-shaped grubs in pots of compost? Definitely vine weevils, I'm afraid.

    Let none escape!

Yes Flinty, I was going to try to save the compost as the pots are really big ones, but I don't think I'll chance it. I'll empty them into our garden recycle bin and let the council cook em.

Check your other pots as the grubs develop into weevils that can and do move to other plants. Get some vine weevil control.

Listening to Gardeners Question Time the other day, it was advised to place pots on 'feet' or in a saucer of water, as wine weevils can neither climb nor swim. Glazed pots also were advised as the shiny, slippery surface is a good deterrent.

Little sods that chomped on my pet begonia in its glazed pot two years ago must have worn crampons.

Now that is funny! I can just picture them, all roped together, shinning up the side of your pot!
