Just been to harvest the bin, got some great looking black crumbly stuff then found 2 vine weevils in it AAHHH!!!!

Is it worth trying to put the weevil killer stuff in the bin or am I disposing of everything and giving up?
By the time I have replaced the bin, bought the killer stuff (again) and faffed about it would have been cheaper just to buy the flippin compost. :wallbanging:

    Not amused...
Was going to use if for spuds in bags.

Are you positive with your id? Only vine weevil grubs need roots to feed on and if your compost is nice and black and crumbly then there would be nothing for them to feed on.

      Hi,
Creamy yellow bodies with red heads and large jaws. Presume they are either feeding on the fresh stuff going in or roots of stuff around/under the bin.
Look like the pics on the vine weevel killer packaging anyway.
Think I'm gonna get a jumbo pack of nematodes and do all the beds and pots (and compost bin). My pieris definately looks like the leaves have been munched, tel tale notches over edges of nearly all the leaves.
      Biological warfare will commence...

No way would I throw good home-made compost away even if I had to sieve it with a tea strainer to get the VW out! But if you spread it out onto a piece of plastic in the open and turn it a few times the birds will do most of the work for you. If there are no roots there can't be many VW in there as Palustris says.

Providing your compost bin isn't plastic try pouring boiling water on it, that should kill them off, just be careful not to splash it on yourself or nearby plants.

I would sift them out and squish them, rather than risk harming the helpful wee beasties which are in the compost.

I was chatting to an expert grower (owner of Desert World) yesterday and he said he never has trouble with vine weevil. He crushes one mothball and mixes it in with a bucket of home made compost. Then pots up. :blue thumb:

A head gardener, at Bressingham, keeps the deer away from his plants by cutting up blocks of cheap soap and hanging them in small netting bags on short canes. The bags will just hold one bar of soap and the canes are about 2ft high. apparently, the deer hate the smell.

Sheal, they just changed the chemical from Naphthalene to p-dichlorobenzene. Stinks just as badly! :heehee:

                  Hi

Not vinewevil I have forgotten the name but they are good to have, as those huge jaws help catch other insects.
I will have a nose and see I can find out what they are called , I find them all the time in my compost bin ,
