At lunchtime I watched the old Vulcan bomber doing its practice run ready for the airshow next week. It was quite eerie as the weather is overcast and it was partly hidden by the mist, it looked quite sinister as it rumbled about. Glorious shape and wonderful noise though, and a Herculean effort by the restoration team getting this back flying again.

Sorry Marley, it was whilst I was eating me lunch and I wasn't prepared for it. It's supposed to be flying in the show on Friday next week (& Sat/Sun). I've tried taking piccies of planes before and they always end up looking like specs of dust, so I won't promise anything :)

Especially for you Marley I went back today and took this photo of it as it did its display.

I was pretty close to it, but still my photographic skills let me down, its a bit blurry.
Anyone going to the show this weekend should see it.

Hey mate, don't worry...you captured it. What a beautiful plane that was.

Have you seen the new American Raptor....wow, makes the Euro fighter look like a WW2 plane.

Yes I watched the Raptor on tuesday (I think it was) doing its display - it was the first time it was displaying outside the US and its not flying again at Farnborough, so I didn't want to miss it. Like you say it was truly awesome, making the Eurofighter look sluggish. I like the bit where it shoots up vertically then just stops and hangs in the air before falling backwards like a leaf. I'm not sure what use that is, but for a display its pretty good - although I saw the Russian SU-37 a few years ago do a very similar display (its got the same vectored thrust as the Raptor for any aircraft geeks out there).

I also watched the Vickers Vimy replica (a WWI bomber) do its slow amble around the airfield, I think there may be some more really older aircraft flying this weekend.

Cheers walnut - its good to watch but you just don't get the noise effect on t'internet, when it takes off with afterburners going it pounds your chest (mind you so did the Eurofighter and others).

Actually I like the new Airbus 380 display as much as any, its very slow flypast low over the airfield is spectacular because its just so big, and they seem to be able to throw it about with ease.

I used to work on Vulcan and Victor back in the 60's including 558. Last time I saw 558 fly was at Culdrose naval air base in Cornwall quite a few years back, the noise was such that it set of most of the car alarms in the car park.
