    Hi pollyanne,
Think it would have been an idea to incorporate some tanking before the wall was built or before rockery went in. Which was first?

sorry im not sure what tanking is,
we had to dig out to put in a patio ,which ment the lawn area was quite high up,so we sloped the edge to form a rockery, then had a small wall built.will the soil penatrate the bricks eventually, and make the wall damp?its only a single brick depth wall

Hello Polyanne, I think John means a water moisture barrier between the soil and the wall. If the wall is only 4 or 500mm high then You may not get water damage. If you're concerned then dig out a narrow trench of soil along the wall but not too near it, say about 300mm and fill the bottom with about 100mm of pea gravel all along the trench. Cover with soil and this will act as a soak away. The trench wants to be deepr than the base of the wall.
