I have a field planted by previous owners with "meadow seed". They said "It only needs mowing once or twice a year", but I forget to ask when.....Does anyone know? I don't know what plants are there, other than snowdrops, cowslips & wild arum so far.

    Hi Liz,

I think it's usually between late June and early September, depending on whether you want to encourage early flowering species or later ones. If you have the space, time and / or patience, an effective trick is to mow one section in each of the four months - that way you know you will provide ideal conditions for a variety of wild flowers, and this will also encourage a diverse selection of wildlife.

    Hi Liz.

A properly managed meadow near here was mown about 3 weeks ago. It's now full of cowslips.
Throught the summer it fills with many meadow plants and looks lovely as I pass it each day going to work.
The next cut will be at "hay making time", obviously with large machinery.
The field has been managed for several years now and gets better each one.
I have noticed there are never any grazing animals in there, well, only rabbits!

    Good luck.
