    War and Peace by Tolstoy..
    The BIG book
    Has anybody read it?
    Is it worth the effort?
    Is it a challenge?
Will I be a better person afterwards?
I have a copy on my new e reader and would not want to start before I know the quality of the read
    Thanks
    Robert

I sat down and watched the folm once, it was about 6 hours long, if I remember rightly. Still don`t know what it was about, I wouldn`t attempt to read it, and trust me, I`m, a Bibliophile.:yez:

Hi Cap Its just depends on what you like to read, its got everything in it,its more than a Book , more a way of Life,I found it spellbinding
and full of emotions and very informative but that is just my oppinion
for what its worth:) It also got one of the shortist reviews on record
from a critic who slated it.
    Napleon Invaded!
    It Snowed!
    Napoleon Failed!
    Russia Won!

I still have the decision to make on "War and Peace".
While I am pondering the task ahead I have read "The Time Machine" and nearly finished "Journey to the centre of the earth".
I may go for W&P next or tackle some tender Jane Austen.
You may think I am catching up with somethng I should have done years ago.
You would be thinking correct. It is only now I am finding the time
    Decisions...decisions..

Read it Capney. It is worth it.

Best ( in my opinion) Austen-Persuasion.

Just another quick thought-I read all the time sorry-you might have your appetite whetted by Anna Karenina first.

Not read either, but is Anna Karenina easier to get into?

Anna Karenina is a very very easy book to get into. It`s quite captivating. Big books put people off, which is a shame and War and Peace is no exception. If I had have seen the Lord of the Rings as the big whopping book it is when it is all in one I would never have tackled it when I did.

Personally, I prefer Emile Zola, especially L`Assomoir. French of course, but Penguin do do some very good translations.

"You may think I am catching up with somethng I should have done years ago.

capney, I belonged to book clubs for years, classic and otherwise and it puzzled people as to why because I never read as I always had demanding jobs as well as a husband/house/garden to tend to.

Now, as you, I have time to read and I find it very relaxing.

I looked and War and Peace is still in my bookcase ....

lolli, I would never have ventured into Lord of the Rings either, although t'other half did, along with Atlas Shrugged and other some voluminous books ....s00k

Enjoy whatever you read over the shutdown .... I shall be reading Crossings by Danielle Steele .... I know, I know .... :)

Might try Anna Karenina in that case. I quite enjoy reading about Russian history. Pre revolution only though-the Soviet era and its dreary propoganda literature does nothing for me.

I have a copy which I keep meaning to read. Will get round to it.

My last 'Heavy read' was a factual book written by Steve Coll entitled Ghost Wars. A remarkable insight into the link between Osama Bin Laden and the C.I.A from the Afghan war right up to September 11.
