        and apparently, too much water will damage your kidneys! This was on the BBCtv news about a week ago! Apparently the usually recommended 8 glasses of water per day has now been shown to be far too much and can cause anaemia! :help:

          Certainly true in my case. If I drink that much water I have to keep visiting the loo.

          Then afterwards I can't remember what I was doing before I went in there. :scratch:

                This is hotly contested (drink some water to cool you down) as the media only (as usual) reported on one side of the argument. Dr Margaret McCatney stated in the BMJ that too much could be bad for your health and said that the 'drink water for your health' brigade had got it wrong. Of course, the media didn't publish the response to her research that refuted her arguments and the medical profession are concerned that the public will now reduce their intake and create problems from lack of water :rolleyespink:

                As with all things, taking it to extremes can cause problems. A large proportion of research that has been done recently has been with athletes. They have been taking the water drinking to extremes and have had some serious problems because of it. Unless you are doing a lot of excercise in warm conditions you are unlikely to be able to increase your intake to dangerous proportions.

                A normal adult's kidneys can easily process and excrete 2 litres a day. So the recommended intake is about 1.5 - 2 litres. When you get to taking in 3 litres or more you are diluting your electrolytes and sodium levels and this can be dangerous.

                There is more likely to be a danger of dehydration with older people from too little intake because they don't want to have to go to the toilet too much as it can be a struggle to get there. I used to help out at a residential home and saw some of the bad consequences of that. One of the consequences is confusion that tends to be overlooked because the staff in the homes thing it is just the onset of dementia. This sort of confusion can be remedied by increasing the fluid intake.

                The theory also used to be that drinking coffee (especially) and tea were diuretics and negated the effects of water intake. This is now only thought to have a very small impact on the situation and you can count 50% of this intake toward your total.

                As with all things, commonsense should prevail. Drinking more water early in the morning makes sense as you are more able to cope with going to the loo during the day. Drinking it all at night is pretty sure to get you up during the night.

                On an episode of 'Inside Nature's Giants' recently, the animal in question was the camel.

                One of the researchers decided to race a camel at drinking 5 gallons of water. Nobody pretended there was any chance the man would win, the point was to see just how much the camel won by.

                There was an entire team of medical people on hand ready, and a health warning was given. Apparently, water overload can cause your red blood cells to randomly explode, killing you dead very quickly.

                By excess, in this case, meant a lot. More than any 2 litres. If I remember right, the chap managed about 3 litres and then felt very sick.

                I think unless illness skews your judgement, you just know how much you need to drink, and don't need experts to tell you. I know when my concentration is waning due to the early stages of dehydration, likewise I know when I'm fully refreshed. I'm sure this is true of most people.

                When I'm doing physical work, if I go too long without a drink, I physically become incapable. My physical ability drops so drastically that you'd think I was about to peg it. A swig of pop or water sorts my out in seconds.

                All that said, I think the 2 litre guideline is very dangerous. On days where I just do my day (office) job and then chill out at home for the rest of the evening, I probably consume maybe 2 litres. On days when I put some real effort in on the land or in a garden, I can easily get through way more than 6 litres (and multiple Mars Bars).

                  Hmmmm......don't know where I stand on this one. I drink water and absolutely nothing else but water. My family tell me I don't drink enough, but having read the above I think my body makes it's own judgement. Being as I don't drink anything else, diuretics don't come into it, so I believe my body doesn't need such a great intake of water.
