I start this thread with a warning - the content may cause a twitching sensation; fear not, this is entirely normal and should pass in time. If, however, you succumb to the twitching and end up getting your credit card out, I hereby absolve myself of any responsibility :snork:

For quite a while (since I was a lad, in truth), I have liked scented geraniums (pelargoniums), and have been wanting to get a lemon one at least for the living room; a bit bored earlier, I decided to have a Google, and turned up this little gem of a website.

Now, I have resisted temptation so far, but will go as far as to say that it will be a miracle if I make it to the weekend without placing an order.

So, anyone know about the different varieties of these? I am looking to have a few dotted around so their scents fill the room when the breeze blows or we rub past them (I will try and resist rubbing my face in them too often :snork:) I might even put some outside in containers next year....

Many years ago we were well into Pelagoniums and want we used to call geraniums. We had some of the scented Pelargoniums like Attar of Roses and the lemon scented ones.We never found them to give off any smell until the foliage was rubbed and the leaves sniffed and then would get the scent. We gave up with them in the end along with the fuchsias we used to also grow as it got too much with the cultivation of them and looking after them over winter:smile:

Good Luck with them as they are really a lovely species to collect especially if you have plenty of time and money:biggrin:

Good find. I didn't even know there were scented ones. Are they the fully hardy perennial sort of geraniums, or the soft ones grown as annuals? I have a lot of room to fill up now my mojo is coming back.

Only the perennial clump forming ones are frost hardy.
I have three regal pelargoniums I got from gardeners world live, I love them so much I actually couldn't sleep at night for worrying when on holiday!!!
They are still producing a few blooms now, but going safe from frost for winter.
I personally feel that tender plants are worth the effort, I'm sure that will change when I have kids to look after one day!

They are the soft ones, but are quite happy as houseplants. I had some years ago and was reasonably successful at striking cuttings from them

We've had a lemon geranium for 30+ years but haven't the faintest what variety. The leaves are scented, but as Kandy says, they don't give off any scent unless you brush against them.

It's not a hardy variety but survives in a pot in the cold greenhouse each winter. It spends the rest of the time on the patio.

Like Kandy I was also really into pelargoniums a few years ago, Regals, Zonals, miniatures, ivy leaved, scented leaved ones, then there were the inevitable books on them, you can definitely get hooked on these plants. I shall still click that link though!!!

Did you know that you can use the leaves in cooking ? the lemon ones are particularly good,The recipe was for a Victoria sponge you laid the leaves on the bottom of the tin , then poured the sponge mixture on top.
It was an old English recipe before lemons.

I didn't know that until I read it on their site yesterday @rosietutu - apparently the peppermint ones are good for infusing in tea?

I have resisted temptation today, but there is always tomorrow......

I am into herbs and spices and ancient cookery books, think that came from an Elizabethan one, I did try it and it was very nice the rose one is good.
