On Saturday I took my 8 yr old daughter to Ayr Flower Show and boy was I disappointed.

It's now Monday morning and I have had a while to mull it over so here goes, I am well aware its a "flower" show but there was nothing/no-one around with any info on growing vegetables, the show gardens and awards entries were stunning but the extra's stalls were a bit of a hit and miss, not that many nurseries, but you could buy the usual garage doors, driveways, "magic" shammy and out of date fashion accessories etc.

Have I set my sights too high and was I expecting too much?

If this is the best we can do, then god help us!

ps spoke to nice man about fuschias and Pansies etc who was willing to give my daughter lots of time and advice.

yes I think you have if you want that kind of advice you would be better joining your local gardening club.

I tend to agree with Walnut Alasdair I bet you was all excited about going to the show almost like a child going to the seaside I bet?:)

Its far better to get chatting with a local gardening group in your area or even just down on your local allotments. It will not matter to the allotment folk if you are not a member the guys and girls down there will stop whatever they are doing and have a chat about 'veg' things with you.

Go and do 'the rounds' chat to different folk as not all have the same pratice as each other and you will come away with no end of information to aid you in your veg quest and you might even come away with a few freebies too!:D Hel.xxx.

I can imagine exactly how I would feel, but have to say, not done anything like that for quite some time.
Do you know of any allotments up there? I find people are mostly very proud to tell you tips, and show you the proof of their efforts, and readily mention their failures too.
We also have a very low key, local summer fete, where everything happens from racing Jack russells in a fun run, to a produce competition. This involves, veg and flower growing, photography, and things for the kids to take part in, like making miniature gardens out of veg tops and old mirrors simulating a pool etc. I always learn SO much from folks there! (Great 'people watching' too!) All the so called feature events seem to me to be just about advertisers and making money,
never mind, just don't get caught again eh?

What a shame they didn't have anyone there for it. Maybe someone should get over there! :D
