Long story made short , while i was in a japanese restaurant , I`asked for some wasabi , the waiter told me that they had some fresh wasabi as well ......I stopped him to grate all the root and by accident that root end up in my pocket ....;) .
Now that root is germinating , even if was half grated .

any one ever grown them? will they survive outside?

Isn't wasabi just a type of horse radish?

I always eated the wasabi paste and actually didn`t even know that they actually mix with horse radish , the wasabi per se it`s not so strong , but actually really mild and pleasant.

It`s cultivated in Japan so should take some cold and lot of wet , but not sure how much.

I have bought some peanuts covered in wasabi powder in morrison and the taste of this green powder is in between ginger and horseradish.

I usually use the paste , but didn`t know that actually is a mix of wasabi and horseradish , the wasabi is really delicate ......love it but it take years to grow while the
        horse radish is really quick....

apparently it`s hardy to -12c .....and look nice as well .
this is how it was served to me ....
what would you have done ? ;)

I would have left the restaurant dragging my handbag out on a trolley.:blue thumb:

Wasabi is very pungent in my experience, but a different sort of heat to chile heat. It is kind of a sharp, grassy heat in the nose whereas chile is a warm heat in the the throat. Am i making any sense?

I would like to grow some, but need a library of recipes that use it. Also, is it very invasive?

Now I know what it looks like I can watch out for it at the Chinese supermarket.

Chinese market don`t sell them , usually they hate each other , been looking for fresh wasabi in few chinese shop before and the answer was the same : this is a chinese shop and not a japanese shop , only find a japanise shop year ago in London , always wanted to grow the japanese ginger as well the only one who can be gown in UK.

Apparently as far as i was reading the wasabi is not invasive outside Japan , love water
and the cold winter and fresh summer keeps well undercontrol , really slow grower.
