    There seems to be very few wasps about in East Sussex this year . That may help the Apple crop. Is it the same in your area?

    :sign0016: to Gardeners Corner. I'm in Battle and I've only seen 2 so far. Had to squash one of them - a friend's 17 week old German Shepherd pup showing too much interest in it....:oops:

    I've got about 20 apple trees grown mainly for juicing and wasps are a real nuisance as we have to wear gloves to pick up windfalls, then the wasps go for the apples we've gathered, then they come in even greater numbers when we started pressing, buzzing around the scratter, buckets of pommace, the press, buckets of juice and even then it doesn't stop as they'll swarm around the composters containing pressed pulp for ages and attack you when you add more stuff.

            They're pics from last year, Spruce. I bought a sack of Bird Seed and in it was mixed really small lumps of fat.............and that's what they were after.

              They will be there later in the season.
              Not sure they are a problem to the apple crop.

              For me its starlings, they peck the apples and the wasps get in afterwards.
              I dont think a wasp is capable of getting through an apple skin un aided.

                That would make sense Pete, and you are right it is normally later in the season but just have seen so few this year it's amazing. Armandii the photos Are amazing what camera do you use ??

                Hi Dave, I'm glad you like them. I use a Pentax K5. I also have a collection of old Pentax lenses from 28mm to 500mm and they get used a lot when taking shots like that.

                  We've had wasps around since the spring. They've got a nest in a hole in the ground under one of our plum trees. They never usually bother us but I'm going to have to get rid of it because of them being in the roots of the plum tree.

                  The plums are now ripening (picked about 20lb so far) and once the wasps start on the ripe plums they get drunk on the fermenting ones. When they're drunk they can be very aggressive (just like the yobos in town :heehee:) so they have to go. I shall squirt powder in the nest at dusk and run like mad.
