      Love that Alex!
I have a friend who does 60 to 70% of his "shopping" in the skips round the back of the local supermarkets!

      Erm ... hang on a minute ....
      Really?
"Consumer culture" drove the bus for standard shaped foods did it? And farmers happy to grow surplus seasonal produce for the pure joy of it? What a load of cobblestones!

As to the second point: so why isn't this food being offered to the homeless and charities then?

Precisely the same reasons for both: EU Regs!

So, how come, as Germany is a member state, they can do this with food which is regulated against? :dunno:

Slightly different thing but still on the subject of waste food, did anyone see Huge Furry Witteringstall's article about fishing quotas?

Basically fishing boats are only allowed to land a certain weight in fish, but they are not prevented from catching that much fish, and indeed they can't be that selective because a net is a net at the end of the day. So anything over the quota is thrown back, often dead by this time having been hauled out of the sea.

So, teaming up with local people in some seaside town, and the fishermen, they made a bold statement. All the locals gathered on the beach at a certain time, and all the boats came in with their catch. They got as close to the beach as they could without actually landing, then threw the surplus fish over the side, into the shallow water just in front of the waiting locals. That way the fishermen hadn't actually landed a single fish over their quota, but the fish that had been caught anyway did not go to waste.
