Bought these water gel liners on Ebay 4 for £2.95 . They are a large diameter for baskets, and not as messy as the loose gel :blue thumb:
The roots will grow through the fabric , and the water gel is sandwiched in the middle.

It will be interesting to see if the roots do actually grow through, this puts me in mind of those awful 'hairnets' they sell around the roots of small plants. Nothing seems to get through those - neither water nor roots. Please let us know your results.

Agree with you Tetters about those plug root hairnets. I always remove them. I think growers will generally admit now that they are there for their own convenience rather than for our benefit.:noidea: They definitely do adversely affect the development of plants

I am going to cut 6 or 8 slices into it like photo and place it in the bottom third of the basket. I'll just use them in the 2 baskets at the front of the house which has sun all day.
            I also remove plug hairnets.

That looks like a good idea Harry, it should work well :blue thumb:. I planted hundreds of baskets (a long time ago) for customers, and there was no water gel then - as far as I know, so I used plastic saucers in the base of the baskets with a tube from top to bottom to pour water into.
