Could anyone tell me how and when I can split my water lilies. They are far too big now and have almost stopped flowering.

    Thanks,

Best done in spring split the crown using a sharp knife, use the freshest new rhizomes trim the roots back, plant 4or5 pieces in a new basket you can use aquatic compost I use clay cover the top of the basket with pebbles (especially if you have fish)to stop disturbance of the compost. They like full sun on the pond and don't like water disturbance caused through fountains and waterfalls.

Yeah, I think spring is the best time, but a large overgrown water lilly can be really heavy if your lifting it out the pond.
I'd replant the largest pieces that you can, from the most vigourous shoots, otherwise it can take a while for flowering to start again.
