Out of curiosity I prised some seeds out of a water lotus seed head that my mum has in her pot pouri. I found done instruction on line on how to germinate them and basically decided to ignore them and just toss the seeds in my fish tank. Well today I had the shock of my life. The seeds have germinated and our on quite a lot if growth I only chucked them in a week ago!

I never really expected them to grow. Anyone got any idea what I should do next? It would've awesome if I could get these to s decent size.

      Coolsox,
I germinated a Lotus last year.
It did quite well until winter. It went dormant and didn't come up again. Not sure why as it was indoors, so I don't think it got chilled over the winter.

If the leaf/leaves break the surface will they burn under the lights?

The lights are compact fluorescent and give off very little heat. To be honest though, now they have germinated I'm going o pot them up and put them in a bucket of water.

I've got some growing, Sal sent me the seed last year.

I'm beginning to think I need a tropical tank in the greenhouse in order to grow them properly though.

I just overwintered in mud in the cool greenhouse.

Pete I was talking with an English seller ,
that variety is indeed the russian variety , but even him living in Cornwall manage to get them flowering only inside the greenhouse ....apparently they need warm water and more light that we got over in Uk .

the person who I asked about the cultivation told me not to leave them outdoor and overwintering them in the greenhouse ......Unfortunatly I didn`t listen and lost them ...
But giving up is not in my book and will try untill I will manage .

I hope Pete had a better luck and may post a picture :snork:

I've almost killed the one in the dustbin, I left the glass over it on Monday morning, I cooked the leaves.:frown:
I have two in smaller containers in the greenhouse which are growing well.

To be honest I'm not expecting flowers this year.

      Sal,
I overwintered mine indoors - in a heated room, and it hasn't come up yet.
I think I need to tip the pot out and confirm that the tuber isn't there anymore.

        Pete ,
I know I`ve made an investment by send you them seeds ...
I know I have to try again ...

Sirius did you transplnt the plant? My biggest mistake is that I`ve started inside and them move outdoor .....this time no mistake straight in the place .
