I have recently bought a house with a small river frontage and have started to clear this of brambles, nettles etc.
On the presumption that squash/pumpkins etc need lots of water I decided to try planting on the river bank.

Picture shows two pumpkin plants, both started in pots at the same time and planted out when equal in size. The distant one on the left is about 6in above river level (2in during heavy rain!) and the nearest one, growing across the picture from right to left is about 1ft above river level.

Conclusion (on the basis of this very small trial): pumpkins like damp ground but don't like their roots actually in water!

That's an interesting trial Prastio, maybe pumpkins would do better there, you could certainly grow some monster gunnera, though you would soon lose what looks like a pleasant corner as it takes over. It broadens the scope for plant types in a garden to have an area like that, very nice.
