I've never heard of this happening, but, in winter, when ice can be pervalent, is it possible for water butts to split when the water in them freezes?
I'm thinking along the lines that water expands when frozen.
I realise the option of emptying the butt will curtail this, if it is so, and maybe if the butt is completely full, then the possibility of splittiing increases? Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi Fonzie. Suppose theoretically it can happen, especially if someone has an old one. It certainly never gets cold enough for long enough round here though. [IMG]

Thanks S. Unless someone has had it happen to their butt and can tell us, I suppose it's something that doesn't occurr, which is good news.

We always empty water from butt before the winter and discontect it from my greenhouse where the rain water flows.

    Then attach again in Spring.

As we get severe hard frosts.

Left it once and the ice fromed was very thick so did not want to take another chance.
