IMG_0012.JPG Good morning everyone, I have one question today and I think it's very important. My tomato and cucumber plants seem to be doing really well see attached pic I really need to know how often to water them do I water daily, every other day, once a week?? The advice on line is so varied I'm a bit confused.

A lot depends on how sunny it's been. I generally water twice a week, but keep an eye on the compost a bit more when the weather's like this.

When the tomatoes have formed, coil a hose in the greenhouse full of water and let it heat up in the sun. Then water the toms at the end of the day, the hot water concentrates the flavour :)

That is a question similar to "How long is a piece of string?.

The only answer to that question is when your plants need it and the best indicator is using your index finger, plunging it into the soil next to your plant and seeing if it is dry or not.

Right now in my polytunnel I keep the soil moist but not soaked, so it gets a sprinkle every day from the hosepipe.

Very soon I will switch to using a can to water, and every drop will have a weak feed solution in it, I prefer to always give it small amounts of feed rather than a big feed once a week, then spend the next 6 days washing it out of the soil when I water.

Not the answer you wanted I know, but I hope it helps.

            Steve...:)

Is twice a week enough though? Most of the advices on the web suggest once a day, twice if really hot.

If you leave the compost to go too dry and then you water you could very well end up with blossom end rot:sad:

If the weather is scorching and you have these plants in a greenhouse without shading then you should water them a minimum of once a day unless the compost looks damp then it might be ok for a couple of days especially if you have shading on the glass. It is a question of checking every day and do what feels best especially as the weather is set to get hotter as the days go by:smile:

You can water every day if you want to create ideal conditions for blight :)

I water every day and feed once a week when setting fruit, but increase to twice a week when heavily fruiting. I also cut the end off a milk carton and sink it in the ground next to the plant and water through this. This is especially good for cucumbers so that the stem doesn't rot which is caused by them being wet at the stem.
